Kate Husted is a Calgary-based potter, making functional pots on the wheel. She also teaches.

Coming from a long line of craftspeople, her love of clay is rooted in an inherent affinity for materials, traditional production methods, and precision work. Her appreciation of the details and adherence to a fewer better approach to collecting informs her making as well as her teaching style.

As a craftsperson, she works at both the seeable and unseeable things that make a good pot, and finds a lot of satisfaction in a sharp line, the smooth clink of a well-fitting lid, and the certainty that a pot can meet the demands of regular use.

As an instructor, she works at finding just the right words to convey the subtleties of timing and movement that wheel-throwing requires. Believing that technique and understanding are the foundation that enables individual creativity in craft, she’ll always tell you why.

Kate is community-taught, having practiced in many studios over the years in Montreal, Copenhagen, and Calgary. She began wheel-throwing in 2009 and teaching in 2018. Until recently, for six years, she ran a small studio comprising a classroom, a membership program, and her own studio practice.
